100 Killed, 350 Injured In Kollam Temple Fire In Kerala
An explosion took place at the Puttingal Devi temple in Kollam, Kerala killing over 100 people and injuring over 350. Twitter was abuzz with cries of help and pictures of the devastation that took place at around 3 am in the morning.
It was festive season in the city and people from all walks of life had gathered at the temple to celebrate with fireworks. Reports are coming in that it was the fireworks that was responsible for the breakout. The ceremony was about to end at 3 am when an explosion took place at the store room where all the fire crackers were stored.
Over 50 injured bodies were rushed to a nearby Trivaundrum Medical College. Several police officers posted for the security and management of the event were also found dead. Kerala CM canceled all his meeting and has reached the site.
Commenting on the issue, he gave a statement to the PTI - "Rescue operation at the mishap spot is over...The next main focus of the government is to provide best treatment to the injured,"
Local media on the other hand is blaming the temple authorities saying that prior warnings were issued to the authorities about the dangers of storing fire crackers in the store room in question. Meanwhile evacuation and rescue operations continue.
PM Modi tweeted - "Fire at temple in Kollam is heart-rending and shocking beyond words. My thoughts are with families of the deceased and prayers with the injured,"
Modi also made the official announcement of Rs. 200,000 to the next of kin who died in the incident and Rs. 50,000 to those who got injured. Modi is also preparing a team of burn specialists, he will be visiting the site with them.
