You are probably not hearing it for the first time that you are not drinking enough water. With temperatures and tempers rising quickly these days no matter where we go, let us quickly see 5 reasons why drinking more water is good for you. PS: Drinking water might also help with the temper sometimes but this post will see other health benefits.

Helps with weight loss

What? Really? Yes, but that doesn't mean that you are going to get in shape by drinking water only. It means that water will help with the overall process so make sure that you are drinking enough water throughout the day, especially during and after  your gym sessions to make sure your body is properly hydrated. Water helps with the metabolism process and increases satiety in the body. According to two different studies, half a litre of water can increase metabolism rate by 25-30% for about 90 minutes.

Bodily fluids

It is a known fact now, thanks to Madhuri Dixit shaking her body to prove it that 70% of our body is made up of water. There is really no need to stress the point any further after this. If Madhuri says we need to drink water then we need to drink more water. Period. But if you are not a fan of the dancing diva or looking out for some facts, then read on. Water helps in maintaining the bodily fluids and their function is to digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. That is a lot of work guys.

Prevent hangovers

We are sure you already know what a hangover is even if you have never experienced one before. Alcohol is a diuretic drink which means it makes you lose more water than you drink in leading to a state of dehydration faster than a normal person who was drinking juice instead of booze. Dehydration is not going to cause you hangovers but it is a mere (another) side effect of consuming alcohol which leads to fatigue, thirstiness, headache and dry mouth. To counter this you need to drink more water.

In fact fatigue is the first sign of dehydration. If you are feeling very tired and exhausted, then chances are that you are dehydrated. Drink lots of water and take some rest. You should feel better. When there is less water in the body, there is a drop of blood volume which causes the heart to work harder to pump oxygenated blood out in the bloodstream, and other major organs also work less efficiently. Thus, drinking adequate water can help your body function better and reduce fatigue.

Digestion and Constipation

Water is what helps our body with the process of digestion and prevents constipation. If you are not drinking enough water, then the colons in your body are going to pull some water out of stools in order to maintain the hydration level leading to a constipation level. This will make the process of passing food harder and more difficult resulting into stool problems. Water helps in breaking the food components and digest them.

Physical and mental energy levels

Hydration levels are directly related to the functioning of our brain. According to some studies, it is estimated that a dehydration of 1-3% of our body weight can shut down or impair many aspects of our brain. A fluid loss of 1.36% can reduce concentration levels, alter mood and increase headaches in our body. This study was conducted in young women.

For young men, a body fluid loss of 1.59% can lead to a reduced working memory, fatigue and anxiety levels. So mild dehydration can affect both your physical and mental performance level.

So there you have it folks, 5 reasons why you should drink more water today.
