Rukmini Vaish came from a family of entrepreneurs and studied MBA from IMT Ghaziabad. After having an experience of leaving her pet behind every time they traveled, they realized this was a problem by many pet families. Hence, CollarFolk was created to be a  one-stop solution to everything you need and want to know as you plan and book such a vacation. It not only provides hand-picked properties that welcome your pet aboard but also gives pet-friendly transport services.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I come from a family of entrepreneurs, my dad started and successfully ran his advertising agency for over 30 years and he has been a huge inspiration. Childhood was quite a lot of fun. I was a jack of all trades – got good grades, did very well in sports and most extra curriculars, there was never a dull moment!

How did you start your career and where are you now?

I did my MBA from IMT Ghaziabad in 2008, post which I was working with some of the large corporates across sales and marketing up till early 2015. For the last year and a half, I have been running CollarFolk – a lifestyle platform for pet lovers

How did you get your idea or concept for the business/organization?

CollarFolk started out as a platform to plan and book pet friendly holidays. The idea came to us out of personal experience of having to leave our pet behind every time we traveled. We realized this is a problem faced by many pet families and that's what got us started towards providing a solution with pet friendly holidays! We have now also introduced a line of pet inspired merchandize that can be bought on our website.

What is unique about your business?

Pet Lifestyle is our USP. Be it pet inspired everyday products, pet friendly holidays or curated events for pet families, our offering is absolutely unique and unlike anything available in India.

What services do you offer?

CollarFolk is a lifestyle brand for pet lovers. From the coolest pet inspired products to discovery of pet friendly holiday destinations, coffee shops and local events curated for pet lovers, we are their one stop shop.

How do you advertise your business?

We advertise CollarFolk via social media and on ground activations.


To what do you attribute your success?

We picked a very novel starting point with pet friendly holidays and have been able to execute it with top notch service to our customers. This has helped us build a brand that is loved and trusted by over 5000 pet families.

What made you choose your current location?

During my stint at Vodafone, I have worked in Kolkata and Jaipur. Delhi was a natural choice since it is my hometown and a presents a good market for CollarFolk.

What are the obstacles did you face in your venture? SINCE WE STARTED WITH PET FRIENDLY HOLIDAYS which was an absolutely new CONCEPT, EDUCATION OF THE CUSTOMERS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WE FACED INITIALLY

    To overcome this, we had to be very nimble footed early on, constantly learning and applying those learnings in structuring our processes as well as our product helped us tide over these challenges. However, everyday presents a new challenge and the idea is to focus on finding solutions rather than fretting on the challenges.

      What are the challenges you face being a female entrepreneur?

      My experience has been no different compared to a male counterpart. When you do something well you get kudos, when you don't get something right you need to go back and figure what to do differently. From a start-up ecosystem perspective, a lot is being done for women entrepreneurs in India, which is great!

      What are your strengths and weakness?

      My strength is in bringing together all the parts that make a thought into reality. My weakness has been patience, CollarFolk has taught me to have oodles of it!

      Do you have any regrets while pursuing your venture?

      None what so ever.

      Do you think you have been successful in your venture?

        We have a retention rate of 30% with our customers in a matter of 10 months and so we believe we are doing something right. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Even though things may not go as per plan, you must have a plan!
