Dipa, The First Indian Woman To Qualify For The Olympics.
Dipa Karmakar is an Indian artistic gymnast from Agartala,Tripura. The 22-year-old is the first Indian woman gymnast to secure an Olympic Games berth at a qualifying event in Rio de Janeiro. She achieved a total score of 52.698 points in the qualifiers and will now compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Dipa was listed as the 79th gymnast among individual qualifiers in the list of women's artistic gymnast who have qualified for the Rio Olympics.

Dipa Karmakar was just six years-old when her father pushed her into gymnastics. Initially Dipa was a little hesitant about learning the sport but she has come a long way since then. Dipa was in the third grade when she left her English medium school to join a Bengali school so that she could squeeze more time for her gymnastics practice.She was very dedicated to the sport from a young age.At the age of 14 she won the Junior National Championship which furthered her passion for the sport. She would spend maximum time at the gymnastics hall learning new tricks each day. Initially Dipa did not enjoy the repetitive drills but she was not a quitter.She never took more than a day off from practice.She was always focused about gymnastics.

Her achievements so far
Dipa competed in the 2011 National Games of India and won five gold medals in floor, vault, all around, balance beam and uneven bars. She won a bronze medal in the women's vault final in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow .She received an overall score of 14.366 making her the first Indian woman to win a commonwealth gymnastics medal.She finished fourth in the vault final at the 2014 Asian Games .Dipa won the bronze in women’s vault at the Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships held in Hiroshima. She finished 8th in the balance beam event. Dipa became the first ever Indian to qualify for the final stage of the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championship.She scored a total of 14.683 and was ranked 5th in the final.Since 2007 Dipa has won 77 medals including 67 gold in state, national and international championships.
