Under the scheme, Rs 8,000 crore has been reserved for providing five crore LPG connections to BPL households by the union government. The Ujjawala scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection to the BPL households. BPL families in the Madhya Pradesh will shortly get free LPG connections under the Ujjwala programme of the Union Government. The groundwork for the project has been started by oil companies.

In the first phase, around 20 lakh families may get the benefit. Ashok Varnwal who is the principal secretary and the representative of Oil Companies have discussed the issue in the meeting held recently. The programme was launched by the prime minister to free kitchens from  smoke and firewood which will be implemented in the state soon. In India, the poor have limited access to cooking gas (LPG). The spread of LPG cylinders has been predominantly in the urban and semi-urban areas with the coverage mostly in middle class and affluent households. But there are serious health hazards associated with cooking based on fossil fuels. According to WHO, about 5 lakh deaths in India are due to unclean cooking fuels.
