Rhino Gunned Down With AK-47 When Royal Couple Was Close By
Everything was sunshine and rainbows when the royal couple Prince Williams and his wife, Kate Middleton decided to visit the Kaziranga National Park during their stay in India today. Maybe the security was lax because more security personnel would have been required for the royal couple, but a few unidentified poachers armed with AK-47s entered the park and attacked an adult male rhinoceros.
The incident took place just 30 kms from where Prince William and Kate Middleton were staying. The couple had spent two days at the national park just before the poaching took place. They were taken on a wildlife safari trip and were also briefed about the poaching situation and how it is being handled by the local government and forest officials.
Suvashish Das, the forest official gave his statement:
"As many as 88 empty AK-47 cartridges were found scattered at the spot where the rhino was killed for its horn. Use of certain firearms, including M4 carbines, point to involvement of militants from adjoining Karbi Anglong district,"
17 rhinos have been killed so far by the poachers in this year alone. A rhino can fetch anywhere between Rs. 5 lakh in the local market to Rs. 20 lakh in the foreign markets like China where it is used as aphrodisiac.
This is sad news and paints a negative picture. Especially when it happened so close to the royal couple and when they were visiting the national park that is supposed to provide a safe home to these rare one horned rhinos. There are about 2000 of them left but if the current situation is not controlled, none will be left except in the book of rare and extinct species.
